Family Sailing in Porto

A boat is the rare day out that works for everyone. Grandparents, parents, teenagers and little ones all find their own moment on the water: a calm river, an open deck, a crew who make it easy, and Porto drifting slowly by. If you are looking for something to do together that no one will forget, a private family sail is hard to beat.

An outing that works for every age

Younger children love the open deck, the wake behind the boat and spotting the bridges and the other boats on the river. Teenagers take a turn at the helm and come home with the photos. The grown-ups sink into a comfortable seat with a drink in hand, and grandparents enjoy the gentle, unhurried pace. Everyone gets their moment, all on the same afternoon.

Private, so it is just your family

The whole boat is yours: no strangers, no fixed script, no rushing anyone along. You set the pace, spread out on deck, and let the little ones be little ones. Our new Family option takes up to four guests and is the easy, affordable way aboard; larger families simply take the bigger boat, up to ten guests on either boat.

Hands-on for the kids (and the grown-ups)

With the skipper beside them, children can take the wheel, help trim a sail or learn their first sailor's knot, all safely and supervised. It turns a boat trip into something they did, not just something they watched, and it is usually the part they talk about for weeks afterwards.

Daytime or sunset, you choose

Pick a bright, calm daytime sail that fits nap schedules and younger children, or save it for golden hour and make an evening of it, with a Port tonic for the grown-ups and a soft drink for the crew-in-training. Either way the river stays gentle and the views do the rest.

What is included, and what to bring

A welcome drink and light snacks, a Tawny Port and chocolate toast for the adults (soft drinks for the children), blankets for when the breeze picks up, and life jackets in every size. Bring sunscreen, a light layer, comfortable non-slip shoes and a camera. The sailboat takes up to ten guests; for bigger groups we run a spacious motor yacht for up to ten.

The practical details

Sailings leave from Douro Marina in Afurada, run about two hours by day and two and a half at sunset, and the river is sheltered and calm. Weekends fill up, so it is worth booking ahead, especially for sunset.

Give the family a day on the water they will still be talking about years from now.
