Everything you need to know about sailing in Porto with Port Sailors — from the boats and the route to what to wear, celebrations on board and how to book. Can't find your answer below? We are only a message away.
About the Experience
What makes a sailboat tour different from the big river cruises in Porto?
The large motorised cruisers you see in Porto carry dozens of passengers on a fixed timetable and a fixed loop. A Port Sailors experience is the opposite: an intimate, private charter for your group only. You glide — quietly, under sail whenever the wind allows — with a dedicated skipper and crew who shape the route, the pace and the on-board service around you rather than a schedule. There is no queue, no commentary shouted over a loudspeaker, no strangers beside you. It is the difference between a ticketed group activity and a private day on the water that belongs entirely to your party. Feel the contrast on our private sunset sailboat cruise.
Is a private sailboat tour in Porto worth it?
If you value privacy, comfort and a genuinely personal experience over sheer volume, it is worth every cent. You share the boat only with your own people, you choose your moments — a toast at golden hour, a swim off Foz, a slow drift beneath the bridges — and you have the undivided attention of a crew who treat you as guests, not ticket numbers. It is consistently the highlight of our guests' stay in Porto, and the reason so many return or send their friends. For couples, families and small groups marking something special, the value lies in the exclusivity and the memory, not just the ride.
How many people can join? Is it really private?
It depends on the experience and the boat. Our sailboat, the Azimuth, comfortably hosts up to 10 guests on a private charter. For the 6-bridge experience we use larger vessels — a 14-metre yacht for up to 12 guests, or a traditional launch for up to 18 — so we can welcome bigger groups and celebrations. Whichever boat you sail on, every private booking is genuinely exclusive: it is your group and our crew, and no strangers ever join your party. If you are unsure which option best fits your numbers, tell us and we will recommend the right boat.
What route does the boat take? What will we see?
From Douro Marina in Afurada we head downriver past Porto's historic waterfront, the terraced Ribeira and the port-wine cellars of Gaia, gliding beneath the city's iconic bridges — the Arrábida, the double-decked Luís I and more — towards the river mouth at Foz, where the Douro meets the Atlantic. Longer itineraries continue upriver into the valley or out to open sea. Throughout, you see Porto and Gaia from the angle photographers dream of: low on the water, with the whole skyline rising above you. Our 6-bridge cruise follows the fullest bridge-by-bridge route, all the way to Freixo and back.
Do we sail on the Douro River or the Atlantic Ocean?
Both are possible, and many of our sailings taste a little of each. Most experiences cruise the sheltered Douro and reach the river mouth at Foz, where you feel the first swell of the Atlantic. Full ocean sailing on the open sea is available on request and on our longer charters, always weather permitting. Your skipper reads the day's wind, tide and forecast and chooses the safest, most scenic option — so you get the best of the water without ever compromising comfort or safety.
What is the best time of day for a sailing tour in Porto?
Late afternoon into golden hour is the most magical window: the light turns soft and amber, the city glows, and our sunset sailboat cruise is the signature experience for good reason. Mornings are calm, bright and fresh — perfect for a relaxed sail, a swim or a full-day trip up the valley. Midday suits families and celebrations that want more time on deck. Tell us your plans and the mood you are after, and we will help you choose the perfect slot.
What is the best season to sail in Porto?
Porto sails beautifully from spring through autumn, with warm, breezy summer evenings, gentle shoulder-season light in May, June, September and October, and fewer crowds outside the peak weeks. Winter sailings are possible on calm, clear days too. Each month has its own character — temperature, wind, sunset time and how busy the river is — and we break it all down in our guide, The Best Time to Sail in Porto & the Douro. We operate year-round, always weather permitting.
Can we swim during the tour?
On suitable days and calmer stretches — typically near Foz or in a sheltered spot the skipper knows — a swim is often possible, always at the crew's discretion and always with safety first. The water is refreshing rather than warm, even in summer, so it is a bracing, memorable dip. Bring a swimsuit and a towel if you would like the option, and your skipper will tell you when and where conditions are right.
Food, Drinks & Celebrations
What drinks are included? What is a Port Tonic?
Every experience opens with a welcome Port Tonic — a wonderfully refreshing Portuguese aperitif of chilled white Port and tonic water over ice, garnished with a twist, that has become the toast of Porto's summers. It is the perfect way to raise a glass as you leave the marina. Beyond the welcome drink, an on-board bar and additional drinks — including soft drinks and non-alcoholic options — are available; just tell us your preferences when you book and we will have everything chilled and ready.
Can we bring our own food or cake?
Yes — you are very welcome to bring a celebration cake, snacks or your own food on board, which makes birthdays and special occasions easy to arrange. We can also organise catering and tasting boards if you would rather we handle it. One important note: to protect the boat's upholstery and decks, red wine is not permitted on board. Let us know your plans in advance so the crew can prepare plates, ice and anything else you need.
Do you offer wine or chocolate pairings on board?
Yes. Alongside the Port Tonic welcome, we offer curated Port wine and chocolate pairings on board — a relaxed, delicious way to discover the region's flavours while the city drifts by. It is tasting as it should be: unhurried, personal and with the best possible view. Tell us your tastes when you book and we will tailor the selection to your group; get in touch for the current options and pricing.
Can you help me organise a marriage proposal on board?
Absolutely — proposals are one of our specialities, and the deck at golden hour is hard to beat. We plan the moment discreetly with you in advance: the timing down to the minute, a chilled bottle of champagne ready, the right music cued, and the perfect backdrop — perhaps beneath the Luís I bridge or out towards Foz. Our crew know how to be present without intruding, so the moment feels entirely yours. Tell us your idea and we will make it unforgettable. See our celebrations on board.
Do you host birthdays, anniversaries or small private events?
Yes — birthdays, anniversaries, hen and stag parties, graduations, corporate team building and intimate family gatherings are all part of what we do. Because the whole boat is yours, we can tailor the music, the drinks, the timing and the little touches to the occasion, whether that is a quiet anniversary sail for two or a lively celebration with friends. Just tell us what you are marking and how you imagine it, and we will build the day around it.
Is the boat suitable for elopements or micro-weddings?
Beautifully so. Our elopement and wedding experience offers a private, intimate ceremony on the Douro and the Atlantic, with optional celebrant, photographer, flowers, music and champagne toast. It is designed for couples who want something meaningful, personal and unforgettable rather than a large traditional wedding — just the two of you, or a handful of those who matter most, with the river and the horizon as your witnesses. We help coordinate every detail so you can simply be present.
Practical Information
Where exactly is the meeting point?
We depart from Douro Marina (Marina da Afurada) in São Pedro da Afurada, Vila Nova de Gaia — directly across the river from Porto's historic centre. It is a short, easy taxi or Uber ride from central Porto or the Ribeira (roughly 10–15 minutes), and there is parking available nearby if you drive. The marina is calm and easy to find, and your crew will be waiting at the pontoon. Exact meeting details, including where to walk once you arrive, are confirmed with you after booking.
What should I wear? Do I need special shoes?
Dress comfortably for being on the water. The most important thing is footwear: soft-soled, flat, non-marking shoes — or simply bare feet on deck, which most guests prefer. Bring a light layer or windbreaker, as it is always a touch breezier on the river than on shore, plus sunglasses and sun cream in the warmer months. In spring, autumn or the evening, add a warmer jacket. Leave the heels at the hotel.
Will I get seasick? Is the river calm?
The Douro is sheltered and generally very calm, so seasickness is rare on the river itself — this is gentle, scenic sailing, not an offshore adventure. The open Atlantic can have more movement, so if you are prone to motion sickness, simply let us know and we will keep to the calm waters of the river and the gentlest conditions of the day. Staying on deck in the fresh air and keeping your eyes on the horizon helps too.
Is the tour suitable for children? And for elderly guests?
Yes — our experiences are family-friendly, relaxed and safe. Life jackets are provided for all ages and sizes, the deck is spacious, and the calm river makes for an easy, enjoyable outing with children. Older guests are equally welcome and often love the comfort and the views; the only thing to be aware of is stepping aboard from the pontoon, so please tell us in advance of any mobility needs and the crew will be ready to help you board safely.
Is there a bathroom on board?
Yes — all of our vessels have an on-board toilet (heads) in the cabin, so you and your guests are comfortable throughout the trip, however long you are on the water.
Can I bring a stroller or wheelchair?
Strollers are welcome and can be folded and stowed safely on board. Unfortunately, boarding our boats involves stepping from a floating pontoon onto the deck, so we are not able to safely accommodate wheelchairs. If a guest has reduced mobility, please contact us before booking and we will be completely honest about what is and isn't feasible, so your day goes smoothly.
Are pets allowed?
We are delighted to welcome your faithful companions. Small and medium-sized pets are allowed on board. For larger pets, please get in touch so we can check whether it is possible and arrange the best day and time to welcome them.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety always comes first. If conditions do not allow us to sail safely — strong winds, fog, heavy rain or flood warnings on the Douro — we will contact you in good time and offer to reschedule at no extra cost or, if you prefer, a full refund. We watch the forecast closely in the days before your sailing and would never put you on the water in unsafe conditions. Full details are in our cancellation policy.
What if I'm late?
Please plan to arrive 10–15 minutes before departure so we can welcome you and cast off on time. If you are running late, call or message us straight away and we will do our best to accommodate you. Do bear in mind that tides, other bookings and the day's schedule can limit how long we can wait, so the experience may need to be shortened rather than delayed.
Booking & Payment
How do I book? Do I need to book in advance?
You can book directly on any tour page, or simply message us on WhatsApp and we will take care of the rest. Advance booking is strongly recommended — especially in high season and for sunset slots, weekends and celebrations — because availability is limited to one private group at a time and the best times fill up quickly. A booking is confirmed with a deposit, with the balance settled before or on the day.
What is your cancellation policy?
In short: cancellations made 24 hours or more before the experience receive a full refund or a credit for a future date, at your choice; within 24 hours, or a no-show, no refund is given. If we ever have to cancel for weather or safety, you choose between rescheduling or a full refund. Refunds are processed within about 10 business days. The complete terms, including deposits and catering, are in our cancellation policy.
Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes — a Port Sailors experience makes a truly memorable gift for a birthday, anniversary, wedding or simply to surprise someone who loves Porto. We offer digital gift vouchers delivered by email, with the option to have a voucher sent to you by post for a more tangible present. Contact us with the occasion in mind and we will arrange it, including personalising the message if you wish.
Can hotels or concierges book on behalf of guests?
Yes, and we love working this way. We partner with hotels, concierges, villa managers, wedding planners and event agencies to arrange private experiences for their guests, and we make the process effortless and reliable. Get in touch for direct rates, priority availability and a dedicated contact who will handle each request personally, so you can recommend us with complete confidence.
Should I book directly or through another platform?
We always recommend booking directly with us. Booking direct means you speak straight to the crew who will actually host you, you get full flexibility to tailor every detail of your experience, and you receive our best care and attention from the very first message to the last toast. It is simpler, more personal, and lets us make your day exactly what you hoped for.
The Boat & Safety
What boat will we sail on?
It depends on the experience you choose. Most of our sailings are aboard the S/Y Azimuth, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39DS — an elegant sailing yacht of around 12 metres, with a spacious sun deck for relaxing, refined interiors and a comfortable cabin. For the 6-bridge experience we operate larger vessels so we can host bigger groups: a 14-metre yacht for up to 12 guests, and a traditional launch for up to 18. Every boat is impeccably maintained, crewed by a professional, licensed skipper, and built for comfort and safety on both the Douro and the Atlantic.
Is sailing in Porto safe? What safety equipment is on board?
Very. Safety is our absolute priority and the foundation of everything we do. All of our boats carry full, regularly checked safety equipment and life jackets in every size for adults and children, and are operated by licensed, experienced skippers who know these waters intimately. The Douro is sheltered and calm, we never sail in unsafe conditions, and every route is chosen around the day's weather, wind and tide. You are in expert hands from the moment you step aboard.
