What's On in Porto This Weekend: 1–2 August 2026

A rock legend at the Super Bock Arena, one of Iberia's biggest piano festivals opening the same night, and a candlelit tribute by the river. Here is how our crew would spend this weekend in Porto — and every big night looks better after golden hour on the Douro.

Start with the best seat in the city: a sunset on the Douro

Early August keeps Porto's long, golden evenings going. As the light turns amber, the Ribeira façades glow, the six bridges catch the last of the sun, and the river empties of day traffic. It is, quite simply, the most beautiful hour to be on the water — and the perfect way to open a big night out.

Our private Sunset Cruise & Wine is built around exactly this moment: two and a half hours under sail past the bridges and the Port wine cellars of Gaia, a glass of Port in hand as the sun drops over the Atlantic. Finish on the water at golden hour, step ashore relaxed, and walk straight into your concert. Sail it as a private charter or take a shared seat in a small group.

Saturday 1 August — the headline: Morrissey at the Super Bock Arena

The weekend's marquee show is Morrissey on Saturday 1 August at the Super Bock Arena, in the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal. More than a decade after his last show in Portugal, the former frontman of The Smiths returns with a set that mixes solo hits and Smiths classics — expect "This Charming Man" and "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out". Tickets are around €60–85, and a night like this fills the city.

Here is the neat part for our guests: the arena sits on the hill above the Palácio de Cristal gardens, a short ride from the marina. A Saturday sunset sail ends in the early evening — just in time to head up for the show with the Douro still glowing behind you.

Porto PianoFest — opening night at Casa da Música

Also from 1 August (running to the 11th), Porto PianoFest is one of the most ambitious piano festivals in the Iberian Peninsula. Opening night at the Casa da Música's Sala Suggia features the Aaron Parks Trio, before the festival moves through the university's Reitoria, the Museu Romântico and Serralves. Tickets from €13 — a refined alternative to the big arena show.

Sunday 2 August — Candlelight: The Best of Joe Hisaishi

On Sunday, the Candlelight series returns to two of Porto's most atmospheric rooms — the riverside Pestana Palácio do Freixo and the Hilton Porto Gaia — with a candlelit tribute to Joe Hisaishi, the composer behind the Studio Ghibli films. From around €23.50. Intimate, cinematic and beautifully paired with a golden-hour sail beforehand.

Also on Sunday: a free organ recital in the old town

For something quieter and free, Conjunções Ibéricas III — Battles and Their Truces is an Iberian organ recital on 2 August inside the Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória, one of Porto's most beautiful Baroque interiors. Entry is free but subject to capacity, so arrive early.

Day trip: Europe's biggest medieval festival

If you have a slower Saturday in mind, the Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria (until 9 August, ~35 min south of Porto) is Europe's largest medieval recreation — 2,000 performers, jousting, markets and themed areas across the historic centre of Santa Maria da Feira. From €12, and easily a full day out.

Local tips from the crew

• Sail before the show. An evening cruise ends around dusk — the perfect pre-concert warm-up, with the calmest water and the best light for photos.
• Book the sunset ahead. Early-August evenings are the most popular slots of the summer; the golden hour sells out first, so reserve early.
• Metro to the Palácio de Cristal. Parking near the Super Bock Arena fills fast on show nights — the metro and buses along Avenida da Boavista are easier.
• Layer up after dark. Even in August the Atlantic nortada cools Porto evenings quickly — bring a light jumper for the boat and the open-air venues.
