What's On in Porto This Weekend: 19–21 September 2026

Past event. This guide covers dates that have already passed and is kept for reference. For upcoming ideas, see the latest posts on our Blogbook.

September is our favourite month on the river. The high-summer crowds have thinned, the days are still warm, the water is calm, and the light in the evenings is simply the best of the year. This weekend the city adds a heavyweight concert to the mix and, up the valley, the Douro is deep in the grape harvest. Here's how our crew would spend 19–21 September.

The headline: Marisa Monte at the Super Bock Arena

The big date this weekend is Sunday 20 September: Brazilian icon Marisa Monte brings "Phonica: Marisa Monte & Orquestra ao Vivo" to the Super Bock Arena (Pavilhão Rosa Mota). It's a rare, ambitious show, her songbook reimagined with a 55-piece orchestra under maestro André Bachur, weaving her solo hits and Tribalistas favourites into full symphonic arrangements. Tickets run roughly €45–80.

It's an indoor, evening show, which pairs beautifully with a plan we love: catch the day's best light on the water first, then step ashore in time for the concert.

A symphonic evening with one of Brazil's greatest voices, in a historic Porto arena, and September gives you a golden-hour sail beforehand. That's a very good Sunday.

The season: the Douro is in full harvest

Beyond the concert, the story of the weekend is the vindima, the grape harvest. All along the Douro, from early September, the quintas are picking, pressing and, in the traditional lagares, still foot-treading the grapes that become next year's Port. It's the season the whole region works towards, and it's exactly the wine you'll have in hand on board with us. The big Douro harvest festival in Peso da Régua anchors the calendar earlier in the month, but the harvest atmosphere, and the wine, carries right through September in Porto and Gaia.

Why September is the best month to sail

Ask any skipper in Porto and they'll tell you the same: September is the sweet spot. The Atlantic swell settles, the nortada breeze softens into the evening, and the sun sets in the early evening, no need to wait until late for golden hour. Add the thinner crowds and the harvest-season Port, and you have the year's most rewarding conditions for a sail past the bridges and out towards the ocean.

Our Daytime & Sunset Cruise is built around exactly this moment, around two and a half hours on the Douro and out to the river mouth, a glass of Port in hand as the sun drops over the Atlantic. Small groups, skippered by Rui & Patrícia, with a welcome Port Tonic on board.

More to do this weekend

If you're building a full weekend around the city, a few reliable September ideas: the Rua Miguel Bombarda gallery quarter is Porto's contemporary-art street, at its best on a Saturday afternoon of gallery-hopping; the Port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, Graham's, Cálem, Sandeman and dozens more, run harvest-season tastings all day, minutes from the river; and the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal and the Jardins do Morro at dusk are hard to beat for a free, golden view over the city.

Prefer the morning on the water?

If Sunday evening is spoken for by the concert, take your time afloat earlier: our Sailing Baptism is a hands-on 2-hour taste of sailing out onto the Atlantic, beginners welcome, with morning and early-afternoon departures that leave your evening free.

Local tips from the crew

  • Sail first, concert second. With an early-evening sunset in September, you can be back ashore in good time for the 20th's show, the perfect one-two.
  • September light is a gift. The clearest, warmest evenings of the year are right now; this is the month for the photos you'll actually frame.
  • Taste the harvest. It's vindima season, ask about the young Ports and the fresh whites in the Gaia cellars, then enjoy a glass on board at sunset.
  • Layer up lightly. Warm days, but the Atlantic cools Porto evenings quickly, bring a light jumper for the boat. We carry blankets too.
  • Book flexibly. With free cancellation up to 24 hours before, there's no downside to reserving your golden-hour slot ahead, and the best evenings go first.

Frequently asked questions

What's on in Porto this weekend (19–21 September 2026)?

The headline is Marisa Monte's "Phonica" with a 55-piece orchestra at the Super Bock Arena on Sunday 20 September (tickets around €45–80). The Douro is also in full grape harvest, the Bombarda galleries and Gaia's Port cellars are open all weekend, and the September light makes it a superb time for a sunset sail.

When is Marisa Monte playing in Porto?

Sunday 20 September 2026 at the Super Bock Arena (Pavilhão Rosa Mota), with her symphonic "Phonica" show. Tickets are roughly €45–80. Check the venue for the exact start time and availability.

Is September a good time for a boat tour in Porto?

One of the best. Warm, settled days, calmer water and long golden-hour light, with fewer crowds than high summer, and the Douro is mid-harvest, so there's Port wine everywhere. Sunset falls early evening, which makes the timing easy.

What time is the sunset sail in late September?

The golden-hour departure is in the early evening (around 18:00), back ashore roughly 2.5 hours later. Times shift with the season, so check availability when you book.

Can I sail before the concert on Sunday?

Yes, that's the plan we'd choose. An early-evening sail on the Douro leaves you ashore in good time for the Marisa Monte show. Book the earlier golden-hour slot and let us know your evening plans.
