What's On in Porto This Weekend: 22–24 August 2026
A more unsettled week over Porto — but don't put the plans away. The city's biggest cultural event of late summer just opened its gates, and if there's one thing our crew knows, it's that the sunsets after the rain, with broken cloud catching the light, are the most spectacular of all. Here's how to make the most of a weekend of changeable skies.
The headline: the Feira do Livro do Porto
The Feira do Livro do Porto — the city's book fair — returned this Thursday to the beautiful Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, and runs all the way to 6 September. Entry is free, and this 13th edition is dedicated to poetry, with a tribute to the Porto poet Inês Lourenço and more than 200 activities across books, music, cinema, theatre and family workshops.
It's the perfect plan for a changeable afternoon: wander the stands under the garden's canopy, catch one of the daily 19:00 concerts on the Concha Acústica, and — on Sundays at noon — the open-air jazz of Porta-Jazz. There's a huge programme for children and families, and the "After-Hours" sessions at the Pinguim Café carry the conversations late into the night.

A weather-smart week on the water
An unsettled forecast doesn't mean the boat stays in the marina. Passing showers usually leave clear windows in the evening — exactly when the light is best — and our sailboat has a sheltered cabin and warm blankets for when the breeze picks up. And there's a real reward for a little patience: after a grey day, the sky over the Atlantic often clears into a broken-cloud sunset that turns gold, pink and violet all at once. Those are the evenings that make the best photos of the whole summer.
Our Sunset Cruise & Wine is built around that moment — two and a half hours past the bridges and the Port cellars of Gaia, a glass of Port in hand as the sun drops over the ocean. And because booking with us is flexible, there's no risk in planning ahead: if conditions genuinely make sailing unsafe, we reschedule or refund, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.

If the sky is really against you, Porto has plenty to offer under cover. The Port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia — Graham's, Cálem, Sandeman and dozens more — run guided tastings all day, a short walk from the river. For culture, the Palácio de Cristal gardens reward a stroll between showers, and the fair's tented stands and indoor talks keep going whatever the weather. Then, when the clouds lift, the water is only minutes away.
Prefer a shorter time afloat?
If you'd rather not commit a whole evening, our new Sailing Baptism is a hands-on 2-hour taste of sailing on the Atlantic — beginners welcome, from €300 for the boat, with morning and early-afternoon departures that dodge the evening showers nicely.

Local tips from the crew
- Read the evening, not the morning. A grey day often clears for golden hour — book the sunset and let the weather come good.
- Pair the fair with the water. An afternoon at the Palácio de Cristal is a ten-minute hop from the marina; do the books first, the river second.
- Layer up. The Atlantic nortada cools Porto evenings fast, more so in an unsettled week — bring a light jumper for the boat and the open-air stage.
- Book flexibly. With reschedule and 24-hour free cancellation, there's no downside to reserving your sunset ahead — and the best slots still go first.

Frequently asked questions
When and where is the Feira do Livro do Porto 2026?
It runs from 21 August to 6 September 2026 in the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal. Entry is free. Hours are Mon–Thu 12:00–21:00, Fri 12:00–23:00, Sat 11:00–23:00 and Sun 11:00–21:00.
Is the Book Fair free?
Yes. Entry is free — some activities may be subject to capacity or sign-up, but the fair, the gardens and the daily 19:00 concerts on the Concha Acústica are all free to enjoy.
Does the weather cancel my Porto boat tour?
Only if conditions make sailing unsafe — light rain usually doesn't. The boat has a sheltered cabin and blankets, and we sail in the clear windows the weather often leaves in the evening. If we genuinely can't operate, we reschedule or refund, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. See our cancellation policy.
What's the best plan for an unsettled-weather day?
Spend the afternoon at the Book Fair and the Palácio de Cristal gardens, or a Port wine cellar in Gaia, then take a sunset sail when the sky clears — the sunsets after rain are often the most dramatic of all.
What time is the sunset sail in late August?
The golden-hour departure is around 18:45, back ashore roughly 2.5 hours later. Exact times shift with the season, so check availability when you book.
