Solar Eclipse Over Porto: How & When to Watch It — 12 August 2026

On the evening of 12 August 2026, the Moon will cover up to 98% of the sun over Porto — the deepest solar eclipse the city has seen in decades, and the first time the Moon's shadow has crossed mainland Europe since 1999. And because it happens low in the west, just before sunset, the finest seat in the whole region is out on the Atlantic.

What happens on 12 August 2026

This is a total solar eclipse — but the narrow band of totality passes over Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean and northern Spain, only clipping a tiny corner of north-east Portugal near Bragança. From Porto you see a deep partial eclipse: at maximum, 98.23% of the sun is hidden behind the Moon, leaving only a thin, blazing crescent of light.

What makes Porto special is the timing and the angle. Maximum eclipse comes at around 19:31, with the sun sitting only about 12° above the horizon in the west — exactly where the Atlantic opens up. The sky dims to an eerie bronze, the light goes flat and strange, and the eclipse then rolls straight into sunset over the ocean. Two rare skies, back to back.

Total duration is about 1 hour 50 minutes, and sunset follows soon after the eclipse ends — so an evening on the water carries you from the deepest phase straight through golden hour.

Why watch it from the water

A 98% eclipse this low in the sky is unforgiving about the horizon. From the city, rooftops, trees and the hills of Gaia all sit between you and a sun that is only a dozen degrees up. Head out past the river mouth and that problem disappears: the Atlantic gives you a flat, open western horizon with nothing in the way — the same direction the eclipse and the sunset both unfold.

There is also the atmosphere of it. Watching the light drain away while you are afloat, engines off, with the swell moving gently beneath you, is a completely different experience from a crowded miradouro. And when the crescent finally slips toward the sea, you are already in the best place to watch the sun set behind it.

Our Eclipse & Sunset sail — the plan

We run one dedicated departure for the eclipse, timed so you are already offshore when the sky starts to change:

• 18:00 — Cast off from Douro Marina, Afurada. Welcome aboard with a courtesy drink as we head downriver.
• Photo stop at the Ribeira. We pause in front of the Dom Luís I Bridge for the classic Porto–Gaia view before turning for the sea.
• Out to the Atlantic for the eclipse. We reach open water in good time for the deep partial phase around 19:31, with an unobstructed western horizon.
• Sunset on the ocean. As the eclipse recedes, we stay out to watch the sun set over the Atlantic — a Port Tawny toast with artisan chocolate in hand.
• Return to the marina after sunset.

Local tips from the crew

• Certified eclipse glasses are essential. Never look at the partial sun with the naked eye, through a phone or a camera — only through certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses. Bring a pair for the sail.
• Book early — it is a single evening. There is only one eclipse departure and places are limited; the private charter and shared seats go quickly.
• Layer up. Once the sun dims and the sea breeze picks up it cools fast — bring a light jumper even in August.
• Cameras: filter first. A phone survives a quick shot, but for the crescent use a proper solar filter and focus manually. The best photo is often the boat and the bronze sky, not the sun itself.
